(Habitat Providence) is a non profit housing organization dedicated to the eradication of poverty housing in the Greater Providence area. Habitat Providence builds decent, affordable houses for and with low-income families who currently live in substandard housing.

Habitat Providence:
  • Built its first house in 1987
  • Now builds 5 houses per year
  • Has provided more than 58 houses for low-income families in Providence.
  • Plans to develop an average of 10 houses per year by 2010.

Habitat Providence is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, an organization that has built more than 300,000 houses in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Habitat’s practice of building with volunteers is not just pragmatic: it also arises from the conviction that a community should be built by its citizens, and it raises the consciousness of the community about the crucial importance of affordable housing.

  • A 7 bedroom home in Providence for a family of 11 (upon completion, was featured in ProJo and other media)
  • A new housing duplex in the Pawtucket area (to be completed late Spring-early Summer 2010
