Gray Pnthers energy protestThe Gray Panthers of Rhode Island has a rich history of taking on the tough problems that affect Rhode Island seniors personally. Our priorities are promoting aging in community instead of in nursing homes, lowering the cost of prescription drugs, ensuring access to public transportation and affordable housing for all seniors. We win victories through community organizing and advocacy. We are a democratically-run organization controlled by our members.

 Gray Panthers turkey award

We win victories by confronting entrenched bureaucracies and making our point through humor, as in our presentation of an annual “Turkey of the Year Award” to the person or organization that has been most harmful to the interests of RI seniors during the past year.

In 2006 we won passage of legislation to promote more Medicaid-funded home and community-based services by wearing handcuffs to the General Assembly and carrying signs saying “Don’t handcuff us to nursing homes.” We never hesitate to have a little fun as we work for change.
